This week’s ranking of the top 50 US-based YouTube channels gave us a little bit of everything. On one hand, the top tier of the chart was dominated by colorful, happy kid-friendly channels. On the other hand, one of the week’s Top Gainers was powered by a video in which he rides a stripper pole to hell and gives Satan a lap dance before killing him and claiming his throne. So, you know, little of column A, little of column B.
As the calendar turns over in April, Kids Diana Show is taking a turn at the top of our US top 50. The Ukranian-American family vlog, whose titular star serves as a pixelated playmate for the channel’s fans, collected 396.6 million weekly views in order to move up two spots and reach the top spot in our star-spangled ranking. Kids Diana holds a slight edge over two other family vlogs with Eastern European roots. Like Nastya‘s 368.6 million weekly views were good enough to retain runner-up status in our US Top 50, even if that viewership represented a week-over-week traffic decline of 28%. The other family vlog in question, Vlad and Niki, came in third in the US after notching 322.6 million weekly views over our most recent seven-day measurement period.
The only channel in this week’s US top five to not cater exclusively to children is that of the WWE. World Wrestling Entertainment’s digital destination earned fourth place among American channels by compiling 317.5 million weekly views. That total helped the sports hub move up one spot from its previous chart position.
D Billions rounded out our latest US top five. The educational channel, which is marked by its percussive, rhythmic songs, earned 309.5 million weekly views, which was good for a 21% week-over-week viewership increase.
So yeah, let’s get back to that whole “stripping for Satan” thing. If you’ve done your rounds on the internet this week, you’re probably aware of Lil Nas X‘s latest music video, which accompanies his song “Montero (Call Me By Your Name).” The clip, which features imagery both angelic and demonic, has been praised for its unabashed queerness and its over-the-top presentation, though some conservative commentators have criticized its…unusual take on Christian theology. For what it’s worth, the Church of Satan loves Lil Nas X’s new look.
Since arriving on YouTube on March 26, the official “Montero” video has been watched more than 96 million times, which has propelled Lil Nas X to one of his biggest-ever weeks on YouTube. The “Old Town Road” rapper placed 28th in our latest US Top 50. Over the seven days measured for that chart, Lil Nas X scooped up 84.6 million weekly views, which more than doubled his previous seven-day viewership.
“Montero” may be cementing Lil Nas X’s stature in the YouTube world, but for all of the video’s success, it doesn’t seem to be helping its star fight his legal battles. He had to halt production on his so-called “Satan shoes,” which he released in conjunction with the “Montero” video, after losing a copyright infringement case against Nike.
