During a period when life in the United States has been characterized by nationwide civil unrest, many news sources have ended up among the 50 most-viewed American YouTube channels of the week. Though the uppermost positions in our US-only chart are still filled by kid-friendly destinations and entertainment brands, many organizations achieved unprecedented viewership by offering coverage of the protests against racist police violence, which erupted in cities across the country after the killing of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis.
Cocomelon – Nursery Rhymes is now getting a half-billion more views per week than any other American channel on YouTube. The Southern California animation studio again wound up in the top spot in our star-spangled ranking, receiving 1.11 billion views over seven days. The #2 position was also unchanged from last week, with family vlog Kids Diana Show netting 602.4 million weekly views and cementing itself as the runner-up to Cocomelon.
The rest of the top five was slightly shuffled. Vlad and Niki, a Florida-based vlog that earned the #5 spot in this week’s global YouTube chart, moved up to #3 in the domestic ranking, scoring 477.5 million weekly views. Like Nastya, another channel aimed at young viewers, ended up in Vlad and Niki’s previous chart position. Its 458.9 million weekly views were enough to come in fourth among all American YouTube channels.
Of the five news channels that made it into this week’s US top 50, none experienced as dramatic an upward trend as WCCO – CBS Minnesota, the online video home of the Twin Cities’ local CBS affiliate. Since Floyd’s death on May 25, at least 13 videos released by WCCO have received at least one million views. In total, the 78.2 million YouTube views WCCO has counted over the past seven days are nearly 50% of its lifetime viewership, even though its YouTube channel has been around for six years.
One of the most-viewed videos on the channel is a live report from the scene of the Minneapolis protests, which has picked up close to six million views since it was uploaded on May 26.
In addition to the WCCO hub, another CBS-affiliated YouTube channel, that of Inside Edition, also cracked this week’s top 50. Other news channels to show up in our latest US-only chart include CNN, NBC News, and MSNBC.
