The most popular YouTube channel in the world remained ahead of the field this week – though only barely.
A total of just seven million views separates the top two channels in our Global Top 50. That may not seem like a small sum, but in the context of YouTube’s most popular destinations, it’s little more than a hair’s length.
T-Series is still #1.
During the first full week of May, the Indian record label increased its viewership by 11% week-over-week, which gave it the boost it needed to hold onto the most coveted spot in our Global Top 50. In total, T-Series’ seven-day viewership topped out at 731.3 million weekly views. That left it just short of 190 billion lifetime views, so if you’re a fan of Indian music videos, get ready to celebrate that achievement next week.
For one of the first times this year, T-Series has some serious competition for the #1 spot. As the calendar turned over to May, Like Nastya experienced a 75% week-over-week traffic jump to move from fifth place up to second in our Global Top 50. In total, the U.S.-based hub used its array of family-friendly videos to accrue 724.9 million weekly views. With a little extra push, it can take over the #1 spot.
Like Nastya’s gains resulted in some pains for Cocomelon – Nursery Rhymes, which fell back one position in both the Global and U.S. Top 50s. In the worldwide version of our chart, the Californian purveyor of jingles and songs snagged third place, with its 571.2 million weekly views giving it a comfortable lead over all-but-two other channels. That total represented a 6% week-over-week viewership increase.
The highest-ranking YouTube Shorts channel in the Global Top 50 is LeoNata Family. The all-ages hub is one of several nuclear units to carve out its own spot in the ranking (more on that below). This five-piece reached the #4 spot by raising its viewership 20% week-over-week and ending with 407.3 million weekly views. That total was high enough for LeoNata to roar from 8th place to its current position.
Sony SAB rounds out this week’s global top five. The Indian TV hub moved up one position after claiming 396.2 million weekly views.
Speaking of family channels on YouTube Shorts, a micro-video outfit from Germany is booming.
The channel’s name is The Family Booms, and its members include Aleks Valerie, Artur, Mark, and Alex. Together, this fivesome engages in challenges, experiments, and general revelry, and they deliver big results. In total, The Family Booms content has been watched more than five billion times on the group’s official YouTube channel.
A lot of that viewership has come within the last week. During our most recent seven-day measurement period, The Family Booms more than doubled its traffic week-over-week while also pushing its subscriber count past 4.3 million. Its 211.1 million weekly views allowed the German channel to place 27th in our Global Top 50.
What’s funny is that The Family Booms has experienced this recent growth even though the majority of its most-watched videos were uploaded nearly a year ago. This science experiment, which has been seen more than 260 million times, arrived on YouTube last May:
More recently, the channel has mixed in some challenges and other tried-and-true formats in the family content space. Perhaps that explains its recent rise to prominence, but only the YouTube Shorts algorithm knows for sure.
Here’s a breakdown of the Top 50 Most Viewed channels this week in terms of their countries of origin:
- United States: 16 channels in the Top 50.
- India: 14 channels in the Top 50.
- Pakistan: 4 channels in the Top 50.
- Turkey: 3 channels in the Top 50.
- Argentina, Bangladesh, Germany, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Russia, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam: 1 each in the Top 50.
This week, 29 channels in the Top 50 are primarily active on YouTube Shorts.
