This week, a major international event has brought significant change to our ranking of the 50 most viewed YouTube channels in the world.

Even with all that change, however, the top section of our chart is still defined by the same trends as before. Channels that rely on the YouTube Shorts platform are thriving, as are content providers who appeal to YouTube’s youngest demographic.

Chart Toppers

Tsuriki Show is this week’s global #1. It stars a four-person family that has emerged as one of the most-watched nuclear units in Eastern Europe. Over seven days, the Moldova-based channel added 787.7 million weekly views, which brought its lifetime traffic above seven billion hits. Much of Tsuriki’s recent viewership has come on new videos; a four-day-old prank clip already has more than 8.4 million hits.

T-Series ranked second in our global top 50 for the second week in a row. The Indian record label, which continues to deliver a steady stream of music videos and film clips, added 618.5 million weekly views to its lifetime total during the final week of July. Although that viewership gives T-Series a 150 million view cushion over the #3 spot, it is not enough to catch Tsuriki Show this week.

Like Tsuriki Show, the #3 channel in this week’s global top 50 is a regular user of the YouTube Shorts platform. LankyBox, powered by videos set in video game worlds like Roblox and Minecraft, wrapped up a big month by netting 460.8 million weekly views. Though that was 39% fewer views than the total the American channel pulled in a week prior, it was just enough to eke out Sony SAB, which ended up in fourth place. The Sony-owned South Asian channel, which has emerged as a regular at the top of our global charts, added 457.3 million weekly views to its lifetime total.

Cocomelon – Nursery Rhymes rounds out our latest global top 50. The American animation studio, which also has a strong presence on Netflix, closed out July by earning 451.5 million weekly views. That makes it the third channel in this week’s top five to score more than 450 million views but fewer than 465 million views.

Top Gainers

The current Olympic Games, which are taking place in 2021 but are still officially known as Tokyo 2020, pose a problem for us sports addicts in the Western Hemisphere. If we want to watch live coverage of the events, we have to get up early or stay up late. If we watch NBC’s coverage, we have to deal with interminable athlete profiles and frequent commercial breaks.

The solution, you may have guessed, is YouTube. Both the official Olympics channel (which flies the Union Jack in our chart) and the official NBC Sports channel found their way into our global top 50 this week.

For anyone who treasures both international sports competitions and healthy sleep cycles, the highlights packages available on these channels are heaven-sent — not to mention addictive. I visited the NBC Sports channel to watch the shocking upset in the men’s 100 meter dash, and a few clicks later, I found myself cheering on Ecuador’s first-ever female Olympic medalist.

We would’ve embedded a YouTube video here, but NBC disallowed embeds. 😞  We get it. They want us to view their videos on their YouTube page so that we watch more videos from NBC’s coverage of the Olympics. But does this strategy actually pay off? Seems like the more distribution the better. I’ve also heard views from embeds are weighted more heavily in the algorithm. 🤷  But I digress….

In terms of viewership, the official Olympic channel is faring slightly better than its American counterpart. During our most recent seven-day measurement period, it received 221.6 million weekly views, which was 19th best in the world. In this two-channel race, NBC Sports will have to settle for the silver, though its numbers are impressive as well. It snagged 167.3 million weekly views, which put it in 30th place in our latest global top 50. And if you think these digital numbers are notable, just wait until the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

Channel Distribution

Here’s a breakdown of the Top 50 Most Viewed channels this week in terms of their countries of origin:

  • United States: 18 channels in the Top 50.
  • India: 12 channels in the Top 50.
  • Russia and South Korea: 3 channels in the Top 50.
  • Canada, United Arab Emirates, and United Kingdom: 2 channels in the Top 50.
  • Argentina, Indonesia, Israel, Moldova, Pakistan, Thailand, Turkey, and Vietnam: 1 channel each in the Top 50.
